Editorial Illustration & Conceptual Layout: Classic Novels Retrospective

Project Overview

Trill Mag is an independent, non-profit digital media publication engineered for the Gen-Z demographic, focusing on global news, entertainment, and modern culture. Serving as a dedicated Graphic Design Intern, the objective was to collaborate directly with the editorial department to conceptualize, design, and deploy bespoke digital illustrations and feature graphics to accompany high-traffic editorial articles. This specific deployment focuses on the visual asset generation for the literary feature, “Want To Read The Classics? Here’s Where To Start,” written by Bethan Croft, exploring introductory entry points into canonical literature.

Design Strategy & Conceptual Allegory

The core creative challenge lay in developing a cohesive visual tribute that structurally links separate literary masterpieces into a unified, high-impact composition.
  • Thematic Collage & Symbolism: The featured illustration utilizes a layered collage approach to merge the parallel thematic landscapes of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray and Franz Kafka’s The Castle. Grounded by the shared existential concept of unattainable pursuits, the spatial arrangement positions Wilde before a stylized portrait canvas while Kafka holds his posthumously published manuscript. The castle architecture is submerged directly into the background geometry as a visual metaphor for unyielding institutional authority.
  • Palette & Environmental Mockups: A unified, sinister green color space was engineered to anchor the moody, psychological depth of both text selections. To demonstrate the real-world versatility and commercial viability of the artwork, the campaign assets were scaled across professional product mockups, including a retail bookshelf genre display and a framed interior print arrangement.

Technical Execution

All asset arrays, composite layers, and book layout presentations were executed within a specialized digital design pipeline inside the Adobe Creative Suite. The workflow prioritized advanced photo-manipulation, high-resolution textile filtering, and web-optimized exporting to guarantee seamless integration into the publication’s media network.
